Book Summary –
The novel begins in 1973 with the mysterious death of Yosuke Kirihara, a pawnshop owner, in an abandoned building in Osaka. Detective Junzo Sasagaki is assigned to investigate and the case slowly reveals two lives intertwined by tragedy: Kirihara’s son Ryoji, and Yukiho Nishimoto, the daughter of a struggling single mother implicated in the case. Over the course of nearly twenty years, the story follows Ryoji and Yukiho as they grow into adults, shaping their lives in secretive, morally ambiguous paths. Ryoji becomes involved in illicit activities—hacking, bootlegging, perhaps worse—while Yukiho reinvents herself into a successful, outwardly respectable woman. Sasagaki, haunted by the still‑unsolved case, doggedly pieces together the clues from the past through multiple timelines, flashbacks, and the lives of minor characters whose connections to the main duo gradually come to light. The novel builds a complex, creeping tension not just through crime but through how two people’s darkness, trauma and obsession shape their destinies. In the end, many mysteries are revealed, some justice appears served, though much is left ambiguous, especially about motives, and the emotional scars of the characters loom large.
About the Author –
Keigo Higashino is one of Japan’s most prominent mystery and crime fiction authors. Born in Osaka in 1958, he initially worked as an engineer at a company called Nippon Denso before turning to writing full time after winning the Edogawa Rampo Prize at age 27 for his novel Hōkago (“After School”). Higashino has written over fifty novels, many of which have sold extremely well and been adapted into films and television series. His storytelling is known for psychological depth, layered plots, moral ambiguity, and a focus on how ordinary people can be drawn into extraordinary darkness. Journey Under the Midnight Sun is widely regarded as one of his most ambitious works, showing his skill at connecting multiple characters, spanning decades, and weaving together social drama, mystery, and the human cost of secrets.
