Book Summary
Influence Is Your Superpower is a self‑help / behavioral science book that reframes influence and persuasion as skills anyone can use in ethical, authentic ways—without sacrificing integrity or resorting to manipulation. The core message is that everyone is born with a capacity to influence, but many people suppress it, misunderstand it, or misapply it. The book helps the reader rediscover and sharpen that superpower.
Some of the key ideas and tools:
-
Influence depends much more on behavior, emotion, framing, identity and context rather than only logic or rational argument. The parts of our brain that are fast, intuitive, emotional (sometimes called the “gator brain” in her metaphor) tend to guide much of our judgement and behavior.
-
Influence is made easier when you reduce friction and lower perceived effort in what you ask of others. If something feels hard, people are less likely to agree or follow through. So putting forth smaller steps helps.
-
Asking is powerful. Asking directly, asking more often, and asking for more than what you might assume people will give all tend to increase what you receive. Many people don’t ask because of fear of rejection or social norms. Overcoming that and being willing to ask is a way to become more influential.
-
Charisma, deep listening, framing the request or idea well, and being attuned to what matters to the person you want to influence: these are more effective than forceful persuasion, manipulation, or trying to overpower someone.
-
The book offers many real‑world examples, stories, experiments, and practical techniques such as using the “Magic Question”, “What Would It Take?” question, “Powerful Listening”, and building support. Also guidance on how to spot manipulative persuasion from others, and how to defend yourself ethically.
-
There is also an emphasis on influence for the greater good: how to use these skills in positive ways (in organizations, communities, politics), not just for personal gain, without compromising who you are.
The style is accessible, often playful, with anecdotes, research findings, and concrete practice suggestions. It balances science with application. Overall, it’s for someone who wants to learn to influence others in a way that feels aligned with personal values, and more effectively in everyday life.
About the Author:
Zoe Chance is a scholar, teacher, writer, and researcher, especially in the area of interpersonal influence and persuasion. She holds a PhD from Harvard and is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Yale School of Management. Her book Influence Is Your Superpower is based in part on the course she teaches at Yale called Mastering Influence and Persuasion.
Before her academic career, she worked in more “hands‑on” influence roles: managing a large segment of the Barbie brand at Mattel, doing telemarketing and door‑to‑door sales, and working in political campaigns. Her research has been published in top academic journals, and she has spoken and consulted globally. She also works on ethical influence and behavior change, including advising institutions like Google on using behavioral economics frameworks.
Her work is particularly aimed at people who want to influence while staying true to their values, not by force or manipulation but through understanding, connection, authenticity, framing, listening, etc. She has been recognized in rankings (e.g. Thinkers50) as a management thinker to watch.
