About the Author

Born in British India, Musharraf moved to Pakistan during the Partition. He joined the Pakistani Army in 1961 and advanced to command roles, including as head of Special Forces. Musharraf’s decade-long rule shaped Pakistan’s alignment with the U.S. post-9/11 while quelling Islamist insurgencies. Two assassination attempts failed, but his authoritarian approach—especially dismissing judges and maintaining military dominance—triggered large-scale protests and a death sentence (later reversed) for treason. He died in exile in 2023
