Book Summary
This powerful memoir chronicles Kurien’s journey from a physics graduate in Calicut to the visionary architect of India’s White Revolution. After earning an engineering scholarship, he was directed to Anand, Gujarat, where he joined a small dairy cooperative—Amul—and over decades built it into a farmer-owned powerhouse.
-
Early challenges: Faced resistance from entrenched middlemen, bureaucrats, and MNCs while setting up cold chains and buffalo-milk powder facilities .
-
Operation Flood: As chairman of the National Dairy Development Board, Kurien launched this landmark project in 1970, turning India from a milk-deficit nation into the world’s largest producer—transforming rural incomes, empowering women, and dismantling caste barriers.
-
Institution building: Beyond Amul, he founded IRMA (Institute of Rural Management Anand) and replicated the cooperative model nationally—including ventures in edible oils and vegetables .
-
Integrity & leadership: Kurien’s memoir highlights his relentless integrity—describing himself as an “employee of the farmers”—his willingness to confront powerful adversaries, and his refusal to abandon Anand despite personal losses .
The book is rich with anecdotes about negotiating with prime ministers, navigating bureaucracy, and sustaining moral commitment within mass development projects, making for both a heartfelt and strategic account.
