Book Summary
I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale (1959) is a historical novel set in British India during the turbulent years of 1942–43, as the Indian independence movement gathers momentum. The story centers around Buta Singh, a loyalist magistrate who supports British rule, and his son Sher Singh, a fiery young nationalist secretly leading a rebel group. As tensions rise between father and son, the novel explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, colonial politics, and generational conflict. Singh presents a richly layered narrative that examines the personal and political dilemmas faced by individuals caught between tradition and rebellion. Alongside the political plot, the novel also portrays vivid social realities—gender roles, hypocrisy, and moral contradictions—through the complex characters of the Singh family and their social circle. Set in Punjab, the book poignantly captures the emotional and ideological rifts within Indian society on the cusp of transformation.
About the Author
Khushwant Singh (1915–2014) was one of India’s most renowned writers, journalists, and historians, best known for his sharp wit, secular perspective, and unflinching portrayal of Indian society. Educated at Government College Lahore, King's College London, and the Inner Temple, Singh practiced law before turning to writing and journalism. His most famous work, Train to Pakistan, depicted the horrors of Partition and earned him international acclaim. Singh was the editor of several major Indian publications, including The Illustrated Weekly of India, and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Indian Parliament). Throughout his career, he wrote novels, short stories, history, and political commentary, always with a distinctive blend of humor, candor, and humanism. I Shall Not Hear the Nightingale was his second novel and remains a powerful exploration of identity, authority, and resistance during India’s struggle for independence.
