About the Author

Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (1927–2013) was a German-born novelist, short-story writer, and Oscar-winning screenwriter renowned for her cross-cultural storytelling. A Jewish refugee from Cologne, she moved to England in 1939, studied English literature at Queen Mary College, and married Indian architect Cyrus Jhabvala in 1951, settling in Delhi .

In India, she wrote acclaimed novels (The Householder, Heat and Dust—winner of the 1975 Booker Prize) and collaborated extensively with Merchant-Ivory, earning two Academy Awards for screenplays (A Room with a View, Howards End) . Her writing—deeply rooted in themes of displacement, cultural ambivalence, and human relationships—reflected her itinerant life across Europe, India, and the U.S..
