Heidi is a cheerful and adventurous girl who, after the death of her parents, is sent to live with her grumpy and reclusive grandfather, Alm-Uncle, in a small cabin in the Swiss Alps. Although Alm-Uncle is initially hesitant and doesn't want the company, Heidi’s joyful nature soon wins him over. Living in the mountains, Heidi enjoys the beauty of nature, makes friends with the animals, and forms a close bond with her grandfather.
However, Heidi's life changes when her aunt Dete comes to take her away to Frankfurt, where she is expected to work as a companion for a sickly young girl named Clara Sesemann. In Frankfurt, Heidi struggles with homesickness and longs to return to the mountains. Clara, who is confined to a wheelchair due to her illness, is initially distant but grows to love Heidi's kind and caring nature. Over time, Heidi helps Clara regain her health and confidence.
Eventually, Heidi is able to return to the Alps, where her grandfather has also changed. Clara, now much healthier, visits the mountains, and Heidi's life is filled with happiness, friendship, and the beauty of nature. The novel emphasizes the themes of love, kindness, and the healing power of nature.
