Book Summary –
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (published in 1997) is the first book in the globally acclaimed Harry Potter series. It introduces Harry Potter, a seemingly ordinary 11-year-old orphan who lives with his cruel aunt, uncle, and cousin. On his eleventh birthday, Harry learns that he is actually a wizard and has been accepted to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
At Hogwarts, Harry makes close friends—Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger—and uncovers a world of magic, mythical creatures, and mystery. He also discovers that he is famous in the wizarding world for surviving an attack by the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed his parents but mysteriously failed to harm him.
As Harry adjusts to his new life, he uncovers a secret about a magical object called the Philosopher’s Stone, which grants immortality. With the help of his friends, he must protect it from dark forces that threaten the school and the world beyond.
The book blends fantasy, friendship, courage, and good vs. evil in a captivating coming-of-age tale. It sets the stage for the larger battle between Harry and Voldemort that unfolds over the course of the seven-book series.
About the Author –
J.K. Rowling (born Joanne Rowling in 1965 in Yate, England) is a British author best known for writing the Harry Potter series, which became one of the most successful and influential literary franchises in history. Before achieving fame, Rowling faced significant personal and financial struggles. She conceived the idea for Harry Potter while on a delayed train and spent years developing the story, eventually writing the first book in cafes while raising her daughter as a single mother.
The Harry Potter series has sold over 500 million copies worldwide, translated into more than 80 languages, and adapted into a blockbuster film series. Rowling’s storytelling is praised for its imaginative world-building, moral depth, and relatable characters, especially its messages about bravery, love, and the fight against prejudice.
Beyond Harry Potter, Rowling has written novels for adults under her own name and the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. She is also known for her philanthropy, supporting causes such as children’s welfare and multiple sclerosis research. Despite occasional controversies, her legacy as a transformative figure in children's literature remains firmly established.
