About the Author:
Matthieu Ricard (born 1946) is a French writer, translator, photographer, and Buddhist monk. He earned a Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the Institut Pasteur under Nobel laureate François Jacob, but left a promising scientific career to pursue Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas.
He became a close student of several respected Tibetan Buddhist masters, including Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and has lived in Nepal for decades. He is affiliated with the Shechen Monastery and works extensively on humanitarian projects through his non-profit organization, Karuna-Shechen.
Ricard is a bestselling author and speaker, often acting as a bridge between Western science and Eastern spirituality. His notable works include:
-
The Monk and the Philosopher (with his father, Jean-François Revel)
-
The Art of Meditation
-
Altruism: The Power of Compassion to Change Yourself and the World
He is also known as a participant in scientific studies on meditation and the brain, sometimes referred to in the media as “the happiest man in the world” (a label he modestly rejects), due to remarkable results in neurological studies on compassion and happiness.
Matthieu Ricard continues to teach and advocate for inner peace, altruism, and global responsibility, combining deep spiritual insight with scientific curiosity.
