Book Summary

Gobind is a novel that combines love, duty, sacrifice, and inner conflict, set against the backdrop of poverty, social barriers, and the Indian Navy. 

The story begins in Bihar, where Gobind is born into a poor Sikh family. His early life is shaped by hardship and by the expectations of his parents. Urged by his father, Gobind resolves to break out of the limitations of poverty and to bring dignity and improved prospects to himself and his family.

Gobind’s ambitions lead him to the National Defence Academy, where he trains for the Navy. He excels in his duties, showing courage, discipline, and determination. But he also carries emotional wounds — especially an unfulfilled promise connected to a past love, Meera, who is the daughter of a village landlord.

Later, while serving in the Navy, Gobind is posted to Russia on a naval assignment. During that time he meets a woman, Taraa Karamanov, who not only is beautiful, but reminds him of Meera, bringing back the old emotional turmoil. The new relationship forces him to face conflicts between his personal desires and the vows and loyalty he owes—to his country, his family, and his past. There are also political and espionage tensions that complicate matters. Thus the central tension: Which promise will Gobind keep? Will he prioritize love, or duty? The novel explores themes of loyalty, sacrifice, moral integrity, and how one navigates personal and professional obligations in the face of love and loss.

About the Author — 

Harinder S. Sikka is an Indian author, former naval officer, and a business executive. He was commissioned in the Indian Navy in January 1981 and retired prematurely in 1993 as a Lieutenant Commander. Later, he transitioned into corporate and literary roles. 

Besides Gobind, Sikka has written Calling Sehmat (which inspired the film Raazi) and Vichhoda. He has also produced films; for example, Nanak Shah Fakir, which won acclaim at international film festivals and won several National Awards in India including the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. 

Apart from writing fiction, he is active in strategic business roles, currently serving as Group Director of Strategic Business at Piramal Group. His background in the Navy informs much of his writing — particularly the authenticity in military life, discipline, and the moral dilemmas in Gobind. He lives in Delhi with his family.
