Book Summary
Felicia’s Journey follows eighteen‑year‑old Felicia, a girl from a small, rural Irish town who becomes pregnant after a brief relationship with Johnny Lysaght, who claims to be working in a lawnmower factory in England. When Johnny disappears, leaving no way to contact him, Felicia decides to steal money and set off for England, driven by hope, shame, and desperation. Once in the industrial Midlands she wanders through dead‑end leads and encounters various people, among whom is Joseph Hilditch, a middle-aged catering manager who appears kind, helpful, and benign. As their relationship deepens, the reader gradually becomes aware of darker undercurrents: Hilditch has a history of “helping” vulnerable girls, some of whom have disappeared. Felicia, wary but with nowhere else to turn, comes under his influence. The novel builds tension in psychologically subtle ways rather than through overt violence. In the end, Felicia escapes from his house, and Hilditch, haunted by guilt and isolation, takes his own life. Felicia returns to the streets, still homeless, but with a kind of emotional liberation—freed from illusions, from Johnny, and from Hilditch’s control.
About the Author –
William Trevor (born William Trevor Cox, 24 May 1928, Mitchelstown, County Cork, Ireland; died 20 November 2016) was a highly respected Irish novelist, short‑story writer and playwright. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin, then worked variously as teacher, sculptor and advertising copywriter before becoming a full‑time writer. Trevor spent much of his life living in England, though his Irish upbringing deeply influenced his themes, settings, and characters. His work is known for its precise, lyrical prose, sharp characterization, compassion for marginalised or lonely figures, and a careful moral imagination that probes quiet desperation, regret, and the small yet profound tragedies of ordinary lives. He won numerous awards, including the Whitbread Prize (which Felicia’s Journey also won), and was often compared to Chekhov for his ability to illuminate human frailty and complexity with subtlety.
