Book Summary –
Fasting, Feasting (1999) by Anita Desai is a poignant novel that explores the emotional constraints and cultural expectations faced by women and men in two very different societies—India and the United States. The story is told in two contrasting halves. The first half is set in a traditional Indian household and centers on Uma, an awkward, unambitious woman trapped by her overbearing family. Her life is one of “fasting”—symbolizing deprivation, self-denial, and the burden of duty. Uma is denied an education, independence, and love, as her parents expect her to serve the family while prioritizing her brother’s future.
The second half shifts to the U.S., where Uma’s younger brother Arun is studying. Though he appears to enjoy more freedom and opportunity, he too experiences a kind of “feasting” that is empty and alienating. Living with an American host family obsessed with appearances and consumerism, Arun grapples with loneliness and detachment in a culture that is materially rich but emotionally barren.
Through this dual narrative, Desai presents a powerful commentary on gender roles, cultural clash, and emotional isolation in both the East and the West. The contrast between "fasting" and "feasting" is not merely literal—it symbolizes the emotional and spiritual hunger found in both worlds. The novel is subtle, introspective, and deeply humane.
About the Author –
Anita Desai is one of India’s most acclaimed English-language novelists. Born in 1937 in Mussoorie, India, to a German mother and a Bengali father, she grew up speaking German at home, Hindi with friends, and English at school—an early foundation for her multilingual literary talent. Desai’s writing is known for its rich psychological insight, lyrical prose, and themes of identity, alienation, and the inner lives of women.
She began writing as a teenager and published her first novel, Cry, The Peacock, in 1963. Over the years, she has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize three times, including for Fasting, Feasting in 1999. Desai has taught writing at various institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her influence spans generations, as she is also the mother of Kiran Desai, who won the Booker Prize in 2006.
Anita Desai’s contribution to literature lies in her ability to portray the tensions between tradition and modernity, freedom and constraint, through characters that resonate with emotional authenticity. She has received numerous awards and remains a key figure in Indian and postcolonial literature.
