About the Author:

Maurice Percy Ashley (1907–1994) was a British historian renowned for his works on 17th-century England. Educated at St Paul's School and New College, Oxford, he earned first-class honors in Modern History and a DPhil under David Ogg. His doctoral thesis became the basis for his influential book Financial and Commercial Policy Under the Cromwellian Protectorate (1934). Ashley authored over thirty books, including biographies of key figures like Oliver Cromwell and General Monck. He also served as the editor of the BBC's The Listener from 1958 to 1967. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded a CBE in 1978 and a DLitt from Oxford in 1979. Ashley passed away in 1994 and was buried in Highgate Cemetery.
