Book Summary

Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal is a spin‑off from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which gives the reader the story through Rowley Jefferson’s eyes instead of Greg Heffley’s. Rowley starts off writing his own diary simply because Greg has one. When Greg finds out, he suggests that Rowley turn the journal into Greg’s biography instead. Rowley reluctantly goes along, and so some parts of the book are about Greg, but mostly they reflect Rowley’s experiences, feelings, and what he thinks about Greg, their friendship, and life around him. Some of the events included are: how Rowley first met Greg in fourth grade, the first sleepover where Rowley gets scared, a mishap with a hornet’s nest, discovering (or mis‑discovering) an “ancient burial ground,” funny misunderstandings (e.g. taking something Greg said literally), and small everyday events that highlight Rowley’s earnestness and kind nature. 

Through all this, the book contrasts Rowley’s perspective with Greg’s (as he sees it), showing how friendship can be messy, how misunderstandings happen, how one friend might take up more space, and how despite everything, real friendship means sticking around. The tone is humorous, light, and warm, and often showing how Rowley’s kindness and naivety are strengths as much as they are sources of awkwardness. 

About the Author: 

Jeff Kinney (born February 19, 1971) is an American author, cartoonist, and creator best known for the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He grew up near Washington, D.C., is one of four children, and from a young age wanted to be a cartoonist. He attended the University of Maryland after a year at Villanova, studying computer science and then criminal justice. Kinney’s breakthrough came when he first published Diary of a Wimpy Kid (online) on Funbrain.com, later moving to print in 2007; the series has since become extremely successful, translated into many languages, with movies and spin‑offs. In addition to Wimpy Kid books, he has written spin‑offs like the Awesome Friendly Kid series (Rowley’s perspective). He also created the online gaming environment Poptropica, and he owns a bookstore “An Unlikely Story” in Plainville, Massachusetts.
