Book Summary:
"Death of a Salesman" is a tragedy that tells the story of Willy Loman, an aging and disillusioned salesman in post-World War II America. Willy is struggling to maintain his career and his sense of self-worth, believing in the idea of the American Dream—that anyone can succeed through hard work and charisma.
The play explores Willy’s fractured relationship with his family, particularly his sons, Biff and Happy. Willy's obsessive belief in success and his constant pursuit of the American Dream lead him to illusions and unrealistic expectations for his life and his sons' futures.
As the story unfolds, Willy’s mental state deteriorates, and he begins to lose touch with reality, frequently revisiting memories of his past. His dreams of success and fame are juxtaposed with the harsh realities of his life, where he faces financial struggles, failed relationships, and a sense of personal failure.
"Death of a Salesman" examines the emotional and psychological costs of the American Dream, exploring themes like identity, family, betrayal, and the pressure to succeed. Willy's ultimate decision to take his own life in the hope of providing his family with his life insurance money symbolizes the tragic collapse of his dreams.
About the Author :
Arthur Miller (1915–2005) was an influential American playwright, best known for his works that explored the moral and psychological dimensions of American life. In addition to Death of a Salesman, his other famous plays include "The Crucible" (which addresses the Salem witch trials and the dangers of mass hysteria) and "A View from the Bridge".
Miller’s works often examine themes of social justice, personal integrity, and the American Dream. He became a prominent figure in American theater and was awarded numerous honors during his career. His writing also reflected his personal experiences, including his opposition to McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee, which targeted suspected Communists during the 1950s.
Miller's works are still studied and performed around the world, and Death of a Salesman remains one of the most important plays in American theater.
