Book Summary
Cocktail Time (1958) is the third novel featuring Uncle Fred, the mischievous and ever-youthful Earl of Ickenham. The story begins with Uncle Fred using a catapult to knock off the top hat of Sir Raymond Bastable, a pompous barrister and aspiring politician. This prank inadvertently leads to the creation of a scandalous bestseller, also titled Cocktail Time, which is published under a pseudonym and condemned by a bishop, sparking public outrage. To avoid scandal, Sir Raymond allows his nephew, Cosmo Wisdom, to take credit for the book and its royalties. However, Cosmo, along with his accomplice Gordon "Oily" Carlisle and Carlisle's wife Gertie, plots to blackmail Sir Raymond by revealing the true authorship. The novel unfolds with various characters attempting to obtain a letter that could expose the secret, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings and entanglements. Uncle Fred, with his characteristic charm and wit, navigates these complications to restore order and ensure a happy ending for all involved.
