Book Summary
“Captain Young’s Ghost” is the title story of the 2018 collection Captain Young’s Ghost: Ghostly Tales from the Indian Hills, published by Speaking Tiger Books. Set in Mussoorie, Landour and the hills of North India, the tale is narrated in the first person. On a cold, misty February evening, the unnamed narrator is having a drink in a nearly empty bar when a stranger who looks uncannily familiar joins him. The stranger orders Irish whiskey, which the bar doesn’t serve—only Scotch is available. Their conversation turns to the bar's namesake, Captain Young, and local folklore begins to surface. Later, the narrator witnesses a performance by a man dressed as the Captain’s ghost, and inexplicably, the stranger disappears. In the denouement, the narrator meets a guardian who greets the stranger as Captain Young’s Ghost—complete with horse—suggesting that the ghost truly returns to the town he founded and misses the comforts he left behind.
This story is one among roughly twenty short tales in the collection. Bond’s ghosts here are rarely frightening; instead, they are melancholy, humanlike beings longing for companionship or unfinished ties to the hills they haunt. Other characters include a boy who guides travelers, a grieving girl who sings to strangers, and more — all imbued with quiet emotion. These narratives bring alive the Himalayan foothills with rich, atmospheric detail and gentle spooks rather than shock or gore.
