Book Summary
Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal (1966) is a collection of essays by Ayn Rand and her associates—including Nathaniel Branden, Alan Greenspan, and Robert Hessen—advocating for laissez-faire capitalism as the only moral and practical social system. Rand argues that capitalism, based on individual rights and voluntary exchange, is not only the most productive economic model but also the only one consistent with human freedom and rational self-interest. The essays examine topics such as the moral justification of capitalism, critiques of collectivism and statism, the role of government, and the philosophical foundations of economic liberty. Rand distinguishes true capitalism from cronyism or state intervention, and she condemns altruism and regulation as threats to individual achievement and progress. The book is both a defense of capitalism and an extension of Rand’s Objectivist philosophy, offering a radical, ideological critique of modern political and economic systems.
About the Author
Ayn Rand (1905–1982) was a Russian-American novelist and philosopher best known for developing Objectivism, a philosophy that champions rational self-interest, individualism, and free-market capitalism. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, she witnessed the Bolshevik Revolution and emigrated to the United States in 1926. Her major novels—The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957)—became influential works blending philosophical themes with dramatic storytelling. Rand believed that reason was the only means of gaining knowledge and that individuals should live for their own sake, not for the sake of others. Though polarizing in intellectual and political circles, her work has remained influential among libertarians, conservatives, and advocates of minimal government. Through her fiction and essays, Rand left a lasting impact on American political and philosophical thought.
