Book Summary
Bazaars, Conversations & Freedom offers a sweeping critique of the modern market system, spotlighting the dangers of an economy driven by "greed and fear." Rajni Bakshi profiles a vibrant array of global innovators—from George Soros and Dee Hock (designer of the VISA card) to Muhammad Yunus (known for pioneering microfinance)—who challenge the dominance of free-market orthodoxy. She revisits foundational economic ideas, examining Adam Smith through the lens of Amartya Sen, and explores Mahatma Gandhi’s concept of “Trusteeship” within the growing movement for socially responsible investing. Bakshi also highlights cooperative, open-source models, and voices like the Dalai Lama and Ela Bhatt, demonstrating that compasionate competition and mindful market culture are not only possible but necessary. Traversing spaces from the ancient Greek agora and Indian choupal to contemporary Wall Street, this book charts an alternative, humane future for markets.
