Book Summary
Baluta (1978) is a groundbreaking Marathi autobiography by Dagdu Maruti Pawar—better known by his pen name, Daya Pawar—that chronicles his life as a Dalit growing up in rural Maharashtra and urban Bombay (Mumbai) during the 1940s and ’50s. Narrated candidly and unflinchingly, the book maps his experiences of untouchability, child labor, extreme poverty, and social exclusion. Through raw, vivid memoir vignettes, Pawar captures daily indignities—from caste segregation in schools to menial jobs reserved for his community—and the emotional toll of carrying a name that meant “stone”
More than a personal story, Baluta serves as a collective testimony of Dalit struggle and resilience, merging intimate memory with broader social critique. It challenged upper-caste literary dominance and reshaped Marathi literature with its stark honesty and powerful simplicity. Recognized for its historical and literary achievement, Baluta has been translated into English, Hindi, French, and German—and is considered a foundational text in Dalit and Ambedkarite literature
About the Author —
Daya Pawar (born Dagdu Maruti Pawar, 1935–1996) was a Marathi poet, autobiographical novelist, and pioneering figure in Dalit literature. Born into the Mahar community in Ahmednagar district, his early life between Mumbai’s red‑light surrounds and rural villages exposed him to the harsh realities of caste oppression. Despite earning merit through education, he continued to face discrimination in employment—life phases he recounts starkly in Baluta.
Pawar began writing romantic and political poetry in the 1960s, but gained widespread renown with this autobiography. His other works include poetry collection Kondvada, essays like Chavdi and Dalit Jaanivaa, and short stories compiled in Vittal. He was honored by the Maharashtra government for Kondvada and Baluta, and awarded the Padma Shri in 1990 for his literary contributions
