Book Summary
Published in 1974, Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen is the last full-length Jeeves and Wooster novel by P.G. Wodehouse. In this humorous story, Bertie Wooster retires to the quiet village of Maiden Eggesford on doctor’s orders after a bout of illness. However, his hopes for peace are quickly dashed as he finds himself entangled in a series of rural shenanigans involving aunts, horses, love triangles, and impostors.
At the heart of the chaos is Aunt Dahlia, who ropes Bertie into helping secure a racehorse for her friend’s daughter, leading to confusion with a rival horse owner. Matters worsen when Bertie’s ex-fiancée, Vanessa Cook, reappears, stirring misunderstandings. As always, it’s Jeeves, the ever-resourceful valet, who unravels the complications with effortless wit and logic.
Full of dry humor, British slang, eccentric characters, and Wodehouse’s trademark wordplay, the novel is a lighthearted romp and a fond farewell to two of literature’s most iconic comic figures.
About the Author
Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881–1975) was a British humorist best known for his creation of the Jeeves and Wooster series, among many other comic novels and short stories. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he became famous for his witty prose, farcical plots, and satirical portrayals of the British upper class. Wodehouse’s writing style is instantly recognizable for its elaborate sentences, clever turns of phrase, and endearing absurdity.
Though he spent much of his life in the United States and France, his work remained quintessentially English. His literary contributions include not only fiction but also plays, lyrics, and scripts. Despite controversy surrounding his wartime broadcasts from Germany, Wodehouse retained global popularity and was knighted shortly before his death in 1975. Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen serves as a charming swan song to his most beloved characters.
