Book Summary
Artemis Fowl and the Atlantis Complex (also known in the U.S. as Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex) is the seventh installment in Eoin Colfer's bestselling fantasy series . In this thrilling adventure, Artemis—formerly a hyper-logical criminal mastermind turned anti-hero—develops a rare fairy psychological condition known as “Atlantis Complex.” This disorder manifests as obsessive-compulsive behavior, paranoia, and even dissociative personality disorder, prompting the emergence of an alternate persona, Orion .
The story begins in Iceland, where Artemis unveils his “Ice Cube” project—intended to combat melting glaciers—only for his behavior to raise alarm. Diagnosed by LEP officers Holly Short and Foaly, Artemis's mental breakdown spells disaster as the underwater fairy city of Atlantis is threatened by an attack orchestrated by villain Turnball Root . With Artemis mentally compromised, Holly, Foaly, and Butler must lead the rescue mission themselves. Meanwhile, Artemis’s split self, Orion, proves both comedic and problematic—embarrassingly infatuated with Holly and speaking in archaic tones.
The climax unfolds beneath the waves, with action-packed sequences in Atlantis involving robot threats and submarine combat. Turnball Root’s motives are revealed to be deeply personal—driven by a twisted act of love for his wife. With the mission's success, Artemis is taken back to an Argon clinic for treatment, setting the stage for the series finale .
