Book Summary
The Big Book of Animal Stories is an anthology by Ruskin Bond collecting many of his beloved animal‑tales and poems. The stories range in tone from whimsical to touching, showcasing a wide variety of creatures — from the fierce tiger fighting to survive, to mischievous monkeys, friendly hornbills, wary leopards, curious squirrels, persistent beetles, etc. Some stories draw on Ruskin’s childhood memories, especially from Dehra (Dehradun) where his grandfather kept many varied animals, while others are inspired by the wildlife he has observed around his home in Mussoorie.
The narrative style is simple and evocative, often making readers feel intimately connected to nature. Bond uses animals both as central characters and as companions to human characters. Many stories reflect themes such as survival, trust, beauty and wildness, fragility of life, and companionship. There is also a gentle environmental awareness: animals are not exotic only as spectacle, but as beings sharing the world with humans, vulnerable to changing surroundings and human interference. The poems add lyrical moments, accentuating the moods of rain, forest, animal behaviour, seasons. Overall, it’s a collection that appeals to both children and adults, offering charm, fun, and moments of contemplation about nature and our relationship with it.
About the Author:
Ruskin Bond (born 19 May 1934, Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh) is one of India’s most cherished English‑language writers, especially known for his stories for children and young adults, short stories, essays, and autobiographical works. His upbringing spanned several places including Jamnagar, Dehradun, Shimla, and Delhi, which deeply influenced his later writings—particularly his love for hills, nature, and animals. His first novel, The Room on the Roof, written when he was seventeen, won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize in 1957. Over a career of more than six decades, he has published over 500 short stories, essays, poems, and more than fifty books for children. Ruskin Bond’s style is known for its simplicity, sensitivity, lyrical descriptions of nature, and the ability to evoke nostalgia while remaining accessible to young readers. He lives in Landour, Mussoorie, and much of his later work reflects his observations of the Himalayan foothills, animals around him, and the slow, quiet rhythms of life.
