Book Summary
Animal Farm is a political allegory that uses a simple farmyard story to deliver a powerful critique of totalitarianism, corruption, and the abuse of power. The novel begins when the animals of Manor Farm, inspired by the ideals of equality and freedom, overthrow their human owner, Mr. Jones. Led initially by the pigs—especially Napoleon and Snowball—the animals establish a system based on the principles of Animalism, promising that all animals are equal and will share in the farm’s prosperity.
However, as time passes, the pigs gradually seize control, manipulating language, rewriting rules, and using fear and propaganda to maintain power. Napoleon becomes a tyrannical ruler, while the hardworking animals, particularly Boxer the horse, continue to labor under increasingly harsh conditions, believing they are working for the common good. The original ideals of the revolution are slowly becltrayed, culminating in the chilling conclusion that the pigs have become indistinguishable from the humans they replaced.
Through its deceptively simple narrative, Animal Farm explores themes of political manipulation, blind loyalty, propaganda, and the fragility of revolutionary ideals. The novel serves as a satire of the Russian Revolution and a broader warning about how power can corrupt leaders and systems meant to promote equality.
