Ancient Futures is much more than a book about Ladakh. Passionately argued, it raises important questions about the whole notion of progress, and explores the root causes of the malaise of industrial society. At the same time, the story of Ladakh serves as a source of inspiration for our own future. It shows us that another way is possible, and points to some of the first steps towards kinder, gentler patterns of living.

About the Author: 

Helena Norberg-Hodge is a Swedish linguist, author, and pioneering advocate for the localization movement. In 1975, she moved to Ladakh, where she became the first Westerner to master the Ladakhi language and deeply engaged with the local culture. Her experiences led her to establish the Ladakh Project in 1978, aiming to promote sustainable development and preserve traditional lifestyles.

In 1983, she founded Local Futures (formerly the International Society for Ecology and Culture), an organization dedicated to promoting cultural and biological diversity through localization. Norberg-Hodge has authored several influential works, including Local is Our Future, and has produced the award-winning film The Economics of Happiness. 

Her work has garnered international recognition, including the Right Livelihood Award and the Goi Peace Award, for her contributions to environmental and social sustainability.
