Book Summary:
Agent 6 by Tom Rob Smith is a Cold War–set espionage thriller and the finale of his Leo Demidov trilogy. Starting in 1965 Moscow, former Soviet secret police officer-turned-civilian Leo Demidov is barred from accompanying his wife Raisa and their two adopted teenage daughters on a diplomatic “Peace Tour” to New York. Distraught and suspicious, Leo's worst fears come true when tragedy strikes his family while they’re abroad. Denied permission to investigate, he embarks on a relentless personal quest for the truth and justice. His journey spans decades and continents—from the streets of 1960s New York to the rugged mountains of Soviet‑controlled Afghanistan in the 1980s—as he confronts political conspiracies, ideological betrayals, and the elusive figure known only as “Agent 6”
Smith blends tight, grounded plotting with rich historical detail, exploring themes of grief, state control, and the damaging impact of secrecy. As Leo hunts the person who shattered his life, the novel probes the ambiguity of loyalty, the moral toll of espionage, and the personal costs of political systems. It weaves a suspenseful, emotionally charged narrative that wraps up Leo’s arc with both scale and intimacy
