Tintin and the Picaros is the twenty-third volume in The Adventures of Tintin series by Hergé, first published in 1976. Set in the fictional South American country of San Theodoros, the story reunites Tintin, Captain Haddock, and Professor Calculus with their old friend General Alcazar, who is leading the guerrilla group “the Picaros” against General Tapioca’s dictatorship. When Bianca Castafiore, along with Thomson and Thompson, is arrested under false charges, Tintin and his friends travel to rescue them. Unlike earlier Tintin adventures, Tintin here shows a more pacifist and disillusioned side—he avoids violence and even refuses to wear his iconic plus-fours, choosing jeans instead. The adventure culminates with Alcazar seizing power, but the cycle of corruption and oppression remains, reflecting Hergé’s more mature, realistic, and critical outlook on politics.

About the Author – 
Hergé, the pen name of Belgian artist Georges Remi (1907–1983), created The Adventures of Tintin, which became one of the world’s most celebrated graphic novel series. His hallmark ligne claire (“clear line”) style combined clean lines, vivid colors, and detailed backgrounds, influencing generations of comic artists. Through Tintin, Hergé explored adventure, history, politics, and culture with both humor and seriousness. Tintin and the Picaros, his final completed Tintin album, showed a shift toward a more satirical and critical tone, marking the maturity of his art and storytelling. Though Hergé passed away before completing the 24th Tintin story, his legacy endures, with Tintin translated into over 70 languages and enjoyed by millions worldwide.
