About The Author:

Khushwant Singh was one of India’s most prominent and provocative writers, journalists, and public intellectuals. Born in 1915 in Hadali (now in Pakistan), he was educated at Government College, Lahore, and later at King’s College London and the Inner Temple. He began his career as a lawyer and diplomat but found his true calling in writing. Known for his sharp wit, fearless commentary, and secular outlook, Singh authored numerous novels, short stories, and essays, with Train to Pakistan being one of his most acclaimed works. He also served as the editor of major publications like The Illustrated Weekly of India and Hindustan Times. Over his long literary and journalistic career, he became known for tackling taboo subjects, criticizing political hypocrisy, and celebrating humanism. Awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1974 (which he returned in protest) and later the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, Singh remained a candid and influential voice in Indian public life until his death in 2014 at the age of 99.
