About the authors:

  • Hugh Honour (1927–2016) was a British art historian and writer particularly known for his work on European art and the history of Western art.
  • John Fleming (1923–2012) was a British art historian and writer who collaborated with Honour on several important art-history works.
  • Together, Honour and Fleming created a broad, richly illustrated history intended to help readers understand art in relation to culture, religion, politics and society.
