Book Summary
In this surreal, postmodern mystery—which is the third novel in Murakami’s Trilogy of the Rat—an unnamed advertising copywriter in Tokyo leads a bland, emotionally detached life following his divorce. His ordinary world takes an uncanny turn when a powerful figure known as “the Boss” demands he track down a peculiar sheep bearing a star‑shaped birthmark, hinting that the creature holds mysterious power over the Boss’s life . Joined by his girlfriend—who captivates him with her striking ears—they follow cryptic clues from a postcard from their elusive friend, “Rat,” and venture from urban Tokyo to rural Hokkaido. Their journey leads them to the rundown Dolphin Hotel and the enigmatic Sheep Man in sheep’s costume, who seems to guard secrets of both Rat and the sheep . In a dreamlike climax, the narrator meets Rat—revealed to be dead—who explains that he had ended his life to escape the sheep's parasitic, controlling influence. With its hallmarks of magical realism, existential longing, and ambiguous resolution, the novel is both a quest narrative and a meditation on meaning and identity.
