Book Summary –
First published in 1963 and reissued in updated editions, Khushwant Singh’s A History of the Sikhs Vol. I is widely regarded as the standard English-language narrative of Sikh history from the religion’s founding through the era of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Singh begins with the cultural and religious milieu of 15th-century Punjab, tracing the emergence of Sikhism under Guru Nanak and the subsequent formation of the Khalsa under Guru Gobind Singh. He draws on original archival sources in Gurmukhi, Persian, and English to detail theological developments, the compilation of the Adi Granth, and the transformation of nonviolent Sikhs into a militant community engaged in conflict with the Mughals and Afghans
Major themes include:
-
Formation of Sikh institutions and scriptural canon;
-
Rise of Banda Singh Bahadur and agrarian rebellions;
-
Afghan invasions under Ahmed Shah Abdali and the resilience of Sikh misls;
-
The consolidation of power culminating in Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s Sikh Empire by 1799, and its zenith until his death in 1839.
Written in Singh’s accessible prose, the book appeals to general readers while remaining rooted in scholarly research. It remains an essential introduction to Sikh history for those new to the topic.
About the Author –
Khushwant Singh (born circa February 2, 1915 in Hadali, now Pakistan; died March 20, 2014 in New Delhi) was one of India’s most celebrated writers, journalists, and historians. He earned accolades as editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, Hindustan Times, and National Herald, and served as a member of India’s Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1986.
His literary oeuvre spans novels like Train to Pakistan, incisive commentary, memoirs, and the two-volume A History of the Sikhs, which he compiled using archival materials and contemporary scholarship5. Honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1974 (which he later returned in protest of the Golden Temple operation in 1984), Singh blended clear narrative style with journalistic insight—though critics note occasional biases, especially regarding Sikh political movements in later erase
