Here, in one volume, is a fascinating history of the world told through the lives of over one thousand famous people. It is, in effect, a children's Who Was Who. From Menes and Homer to Indira Gandhi and John Lennon, the most famous of all the rulers, leaders, dictators, scientists, writers, artists and philosophers who left their mark upon the world are included. The entries are arranged in order of date of death because the years of a famous person's greatest importance are usually the later ones. This arrangement puts nearly all the great lives of one period of history together, and they are included in a comprehensive index for easy reference. There are also fact boxes giving summaries of historical developments throughout the world, plus tables of rulers, from Egyptian pharaohs and Roman emperors to the Monarchs of England and the presidents of the United States of America. Not all the characters in this book would be praised for their deeds! They have been included because their impact on the world, whether good or bad, has been great, and our lives today have been affected by their existence. Attractively illustrated throughout, 1,000 Great People is a fascinating reference book. Plantagenet Somerset Fry is a distinguished writer of both children's and adult books.
