Nancy tiptoed round the darkened room looking for clues. Suddenly she heard a sound that made her blood run cold. Someone was coming up the stairs towards her!

Quickly she looked round for a hiding place. She saw a cupboard, darted inside it, and crouched behind some dresses, hardly daring to breathe.

A moment later someone entered the room.

Footsteps moved towards the cupboard - and suddenly the door was jerked violently open
