Nehru Centre was conceived as a tribute to one of the greatest architects of modern India - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who symbolised the ideals of enlightened curiosity, scientific temper, secular values and above all, a belief in the people of India. Brainchild of the late Shri Rajni Patel, the Nehru Centre building was designed by the renowned architect, Shri I. M. Kadri.

Nehru's emphasis on science and technology to rebuild the nation through rapid social change is well known.

The history of the development of and technology in India encompasses a wide spectrum. Nehru Centre took up the challenging task of organizing a lecture series 'Science in India: Past and Present' and invited eminent speakers to critically evaluate the various facets of the development of science and technology in India.

Ayurveda in traditional science as well as subjects like astronomy, surgery, metallurgy, scientific agriculture and even biotechnology and computers formed part of the subjects on which lectures were delivered by an array of speakers who were experts in their own knowledge areas.
