Sunil Manohar Gavaskar was born (10 July 1949) and brought up in Bombay where he attended St. Xavier's High School and College. His father, a club encketer, uncle, a Test cricketer, and his mother, bowler for her son, set the stage for a long and distinguished career in which Gavaskar has played more than a hundred Test matches, breaking all sorts of records.

Between his debut in the Port of Spain in 1971 and the conclusion of the Madras Test against the West Indies again in 1983, Gavaskar completed his thirty Test hundreds, setting up a world record. Most of his hundreds were scored as an opener, facing all the fury of the new ball, a feat not achieved by anyone in Test cricket.

Apart from scoring centuries, Gavaskar's other passion is writing. Author of Sunny Days (1976) and Idols (1983), Gavaskar has demonstrated that he can use his pen as gracefully as he does his bat. Both his books have broken sales records.

Sunil Gavaskar, till 1974 a very eligible bachelor, became 'well and properly hooked' when he married Marshniel Mehrotra (Pammi to her (riends). They have a son, Rohan Jaivishwa, named after three of his father's idols. "He will certainly have a lot to live up to when he grows up', says Gavaskar, as if his son doesn't have enough of a job with a surname like that
