Parenting Function

Parenting is as old as creation itself. And yet it continues to baffle generations of parents. The birth of a child brings to mind happiness, fulfilment and most importantly. a challenge a challenge to evolve a decent human being who is an asset to society. But raising children in modern times is a Herculean task. A parent is forever on a journey of exploration, something that can be learnt only through tears and smiles.

Times have changed, so have the children. Today's children mature earlier, have a base line of knowledge much higher than their parents or grandparents had... though God alone knows how they get that way. Blame or bless the multimedia for it, but the fact remains that parenting thus becomes much more of a challenge. Answering questions, tackling tantrum, coping with childish fears and dilemmas are all things our parents have done and their parents before them, but with both parents working. breaking up of the joint family, the lack of multidimensional support, indifferent neighbours, unreliable domestic help and the need to discover new paths, have put a weight on the shoulders of today's parents, that they cannot shrug off, and do not know how to handle either. Thus, the parents are constantly under great stress and as a result are unable to do justice as responsible parents.

This first edition on 'parenting function' aims at providing the parents with not only a better insight for better development of their children, but also helping them in transforming their attitudes and behaviours from traditional ones to more practical and workable ones.

This book shall be useful to all those who are experiencing parenting at all ages of their children. The topics covered range from the basic issues like values, personality development, education, and career to more complex issues like emotional concerns, sexuality and rebelliousness in toddlers, pre-teens and teenagers.

Dr. H. L. Kaila, is presently Reader and Head, Postgraduate Department of Psychology, SNDT Women's University, Mumbai. Dr. Kaila has over 20 years professional experience and has to his credit several projects with ICSSR, UGC and World Health Organization; and has authored 12 books, 10 monographs, and a large number of articles for newspapers, magazines and journals. He has also appeared several times on television for providing his expert views.
