Book Summary
Monster Blood IV is the 62nd and final book in the original Goosebumps series, and the fourth (and last) entry in the “Monster Blood” saga.
The story brings back familiar characters: Evan Ross, his friend Andy, his cousin Kermit, the bully Conan, and the dog Dogface. This time, Monster Blood is a different variant: the slime is blue rather than green. It not only grows or spreads, but actually multiplies, forming little blue creatures with mouths, teeth, and insatiable appetites for water. Much of the plot revolves around Evan and the others trying to contain and control these multiplying blobs. The creatures drink water, then split or explode when overfilled, causing more chaos. The children try various methods to stop them — capturing them, trying to restrict water, using hot sauce, using electric fences, etc.
Things escalate until the blobs are everywhere, even smothering the kids, but then in a bizarre twist, the blue creatures begin turning on each other, eating each other, until none remain. A scientist appears, revealing that these blobs were a military experiment for underwater combat. In the end, there’s a hint of more trouble when Conan (the bully) finds the remains of the Monster Blood can, eats what is left (thinking it's candy), implying that more of these duplicating creatures might follow. The book has all the hallmarks of a Goosebumps horror‑story for kids: comical elements, suspense, grotesque but not overly graphic monsters, moral focus on caution, and a somewhat unresolved ending that leaves a chill.
About the Author:
Robert Lawrence “R.L.” Stine (born October 8, 1943) is an American author best known for making children’s horror both hugely popular and accessible. He started writing early, earning a BA in English from Ohio State University in 1965. In the beginning he wrote humor‑pieces and edited children’s magazines.
His first adult horror novel was Blind Date (1986), but his greatest fame came with the Goosebumps series (begun in 1992) for kids around 8‑12 years old, and the Fear Street series for older teens. Goosebumps has sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide, been translated into many languages, and spun off into TV shows and movies.
Stine has been praised for his ability to deliver “safe horror”—scary enough to thrill but not so much as to traumatize—and for using suspense, twist endings, and humor in his storytelling. He lives much of his life between writing, public speaking, and promoting literacy among young readers.
