A Russian novelist, journalist and short-story writer, Fyodor Dostoevsky's psychological penetration into the human soul had a profound influence on the 20th century novel. Born in Moscow, Dostoevsky graduated as a military engineer. However, he resigned in 1844 to become a full time writer.

Dostoevsky is popular in literary circles as a writer with a religious mission. He joined a group of utopian socialists in 1846 and was arrested in 1849. He was sentenced to death, but the sentence was commuted to imprisonment in Siberia. His works like The House of the Dead, The Insulted and Injured and Winter Notes on Summer Impressions reveal the evil experiences he had in his lifetime. The present collection of stories reveals Dostoevsky's art the best.
