Book Summary
Daughter of Persia (originally published in 1992; later reissued) is the compelling autobiography of Sattareh Farman Farmaian, tracing her life from the luxurious confines of her father’s Tehran harem—a compound housing dozens of wives, children, and servants—to her journey as a pioneering social worker amid Iran’s political storms. Born in 1921 as the fifteenth of thirty‑six children of a powerful Qajar prince, she defied tradition and became the first Iranian woman to study at the University of Southern California, earning a BA in Sociology (1946) and an MSW in 1948. Returning to Iran in 1958, she founded the Tehran School of Social Work and initiated family planning services, vocational training, orphanages, and community welfare centers. Her memoir intertwines personal narrative with deeper insight into Iran’s major upheavals—from Mossadegh’s overthrow in 1953 through the fall of the Shah to the rise of Khomeini’s Islamic Republic—culminating in her arrest in 1979 and eventual forced exile to the United States.
About the Author:
Sattareh Farman Farmaian (1921–2012) was an Iranian author, activist, and social work pioneer. Raised in the fading Qajar aristocracy, she was shaped by her father’s progressive support for women's education. Despite resistance, she studied in the United States—as USC’s first Iranian student—and upon her return became a leading figure in social development and family planning in Iran. For over two decades she led Iran’s first social work school and expanded welfare services nationwide. When the Islamic Revolution targeted anyone with Western ties, she was falsely accused as a counter‑revolutionary and ultimately expelled in 1979. She spent the remainder of her life in Los Angeles, working in child services and serving as a respected voice on Iranian culture and politics. Her memoir, co-written with Dona Munker, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and remains a poignant chronicle of personal conviction amid national transformation
