The trilogy became an international bestseller and is credited with reviving interest in Scandinavian crime fiction.

Before becoming a novelist, Larsson was an investigative journalist, focusing on issues such as extremism, racism, and corruption in Sweden. His investigative work and commitment to social justice influenced much of the content in his novels, which often deal with themes of corruption, inequality, and the abuse of power.
