Rudyard Kipling was born in India in 1865 but in 1871 he was sent to England to live with a foster family an unhappy experience which is chronicled in 'Baa Baa, Black Sheep'. He is best known for his stories The Jungle Book and Kim, and Penguin publishes much of his work. Kipling's only. son died in the Great War, and 'The Gardener' is an allegory of his suffering as a parent.
