Set during the Christmas holidays, the story reunites Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timmy the dog at Kirrin Cottage. Julian and Dick are recovering from scarlet fever, and George has just returned from boarding school. To help the children catch up on missed schoolwork, Uncle Quentin hires a tutor named Mr. Roland.

While exploring the nearby Kirrin Farm, the children discover a hidden compartment containing a medical book and a mysterious map inscribed with Latin phrases. The map hints at a "secret way" leading to a room with eight wooden panels. Their curiosity leads them to uncover that Mr. Roland is involved in a plot to steal Uncle Quentin's scientific research. The children, with Timmy's help, thwart the thieves and recover the stolen documents, ensuring justice prevails
