The \"little bell which rang in my head\" for Gertrude Stein when she first met Picasso, tell- ing her that he was a genius, rang again when she met Professor Alfred North. Whitehead, one of the great philosophers of our, or any other, time, Justice Frankfurter said: \"I have for some time been convinced that no single figure has had such a per- vasive influence.\" Born in Ramsgate, England, in 1861, the son of Canon Alfred W. Whitehead, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he later lectured in mathematics. Then for thirteen years he was at the Imperial College of Science. In 1924, rather than accept retirement because of old age, he moved, books and baggage, to the United States and a full professorship at Harvard. Until his death in December, 1947, he was a senior member of Harvard's Society of Fellows. White- head's first book, A Treatise on Universal Algebra, appeared in 1898. By 1910 he was writing, with Bertrand Russell, Principia Mathematica. There followed Process and Reality, Science and the Modern World (perhaps his most widely read work) and Adventures in Ideas. The N. Y. Herald Tribune at the time of his death said: \"Those who had the pleasure of studying or talking with Whitehead will long remember the humane and prophetic figure, a benign, almost clerical looking Victorian gentleman, who was the humane voice of these ideas.\"\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Best Of Used Books","offers":[{"title":"Used","offer_id":45550692696321,"sku":"31JPPPQTD-Used","price":199.0,"currency_code":"INR","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0421\/4299\/0495\/files\/zr.jpg?v=1724926288","url":"https:\/\/bestofusedbooks.com\/products\/science-and-the-modern-world","provider":"Best Of Used Books","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
