Lord of the Flies is a classic novel published in 1954 by British author William Golding. The book explores the dark side of human nature through the story of a group of British schoolboys stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. With no adults to guide them, the boys try to govern themselves, but their society gradually descends into savagery.

  • Survival & Order: At first, the boys attempt to establish order. Ralph is elected leader, and he stresses the importance of maintaining a signal fire for rescue. Piggy, an intelligent and rational boy, supports him.

  • Emergence of Savagery: Jack, who leads the choirboys and becomes obsessed with hunting, gradually breaks away from Ralph’s leadership. He forms his own tribe focused on primal instincts and violence.

  • The “Beast” & Loss of Innocence: The boys' fear of a mythical “beast” symbolizes the inner savagery within them. Their descent culminates in the murders of Simon and Piggy.

  • Rescue: The novel ends with the boys being rescued by a naval officer, who is shocked by what they’ve become. The rescue is ironic—the boys are saved from their own chaos by a world still embroiled in war.

William Golding (1911–1993) was a British novelist, playwright, and poet best known for Lord of the Flies. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, and his experiences deeply influenced his view of human nature and the potential for evil within society.
